Compete? or Complement?

John was one of the most sought after employees in his company. His technical prowess was known to everybody. It was like he is the best. Until the day when Johny joined the organization. Johny had far more hands-on experience, he had far more experincing of using the tools to their best. In short, he had an edge over John. Obviously as expected, John started feeling insecure. The professional arrenagement was such that John had to work hand-in-hand with Johny. But the insecurity was taking a toll and the partnership was a compromise rather than being a team effort. A day came when Johny could not take it any further and so he spoke to his boss. After hearing out John, his boss told a single line which made the partnership of John and Johny. Now John and Johny is a force people reckon to get solution for any technical and tricky stuff. So what is the one line which changed John's life. His boss has said

"Instead of Competing Complement"

So how did it change John's life?

John and Johny both were technically strong and both had their own unique specialties. They were in the same ground but still they both had their own unique specialties, their own unique individuality. Instead of competing on the common qualities they had, John and Johny started complementing each other for their individual specialties. Their partnership was like that of a Navigator and the Driver of a Racing car. Both are critical for the team to win the race. And so John and Johny became the champions of the race.

To summarize, what I am trying to say many a times it happens that you are enjoying undisputed power, respect, fame and suddenly somebody's arrival threatens to break, block and disrupt the dreamrun of yours. Through the story told above, I am making a point that the threat to your one's dream run is from himself/herself and not from somebody else. At every stage of life, one will come across people who are better and so competing with them will just add to vows in life and nothing else. If you cannot bear the pressure anymore, you might end up doing something which is not right and spoil your relationships. The better, smarter way to tackle the arrival of such people would be to enhance one's skill, complement the other person's skills and use it wisely such that both the parties prosper. This approach is one of the ways of achieving what we call as Inclusive growth which everybody these days is talking about. Especially in India after the recent upsurge in the Naxal activities.
