Product marketing sits at the intersection of marketing, growth, product and sales. It is the department responsible for evangelising the awesomeness of the product to the customers in need.

Product marketing used to be treated as a subset of product management until a few years ago, don’t ask me what happened, please. In many similarities to marketing, product marketing combines both art and science together and a product marketer is expected to function across tech, marketing/sales and customer or front-facing teams.

In summary, what product marketing does is to “ensure the product gets to the right market at the right time to solve the right problems”. To achieve this, product marketers intersect across multiple departments to get the required information they need to engage the customers, ask questions, research the landscape, design great assets to attract customers and subsequently retain such users.

To break it down further, below are the 5 major activities you should expect from a product marketing team from the basic to advanced level. Kindly note that the intensity of these activities may differ from B2B to B2C as well as the industries and size of the team involved.
