The Product Management space is absolutely blowing up in 2020 and 2021 with 32% growth in a 2 year period.

This is from a colliding of two worlds — from the people bucking the traditional 9–5 salary jobs to embrace the “two dudes in a garage” startup culture; which is extremely product, service, and customer obsessed. To the legacy or “heritage” companies that are feeling the pain of their products not keeping up — usually due to the project/consulting mindset to “do whatever it takes” at a customer-by-customer basis, building bespoke products, and servicing big whales.

All of this is in addition to the tech giants expanding their PM presence.

For the past few years I have been sharing advice learned during my 9 years as a PM at companies big and small — sharing advice at meetups, speaking as a guest instructor at universities and learning orgs, and mentoring 1:1, and I will answer the most asked question… “So what do PM’s even do?”.

In this blog, we’ll take a deep dive into the role, what skills you’ll need, and what makes you a standout unicorn PM.
