Have you tried fiverr? It’s a service to get fixed freelance work from $5. Each gig is very cheap and we can basically communicate with freelancers only on the platform. When we pick up better freelancers on the platform, there are some points that we should care about. I’m going to introduce how I checked on the order for UI design for my mobile app.
1. Pickup a lot of freelancers
At first, I picked up 11 designers after comparing portfolio and number of review on fiverr website. The reason I recommend to pick up so many designers is that we cannot check enough things from the website. So this step is the preperation for step 2. When it comes to a customer review, I think it should not be referred. Because most of them are one phrase comment like “Awesome.” Even though the comment is positive, we hardly see what is the scope of the design work about each review.
2. Define requirement before contact
This is to avoid too much revision. And it will help us find designers who can commit the requirement.
3. Check communication skill
Communication effort is the biggest work when we work with freelance. So I sent them a message with a lot of topics. The first one is the detailed portfolio. The second one is my design requirement. The last one is the initial delivery date and price negotiation.
Result
When I checked communication skill, there was the big difference between freelancers. Some replied for only some of topics. Another who has a lot of good reviews replied only “OK”.
After checking communication skill, there remained only 3 persons. And I picked up the one who has more portfolio about app design and more customer reviews as an evidence of their work.
Conclusion
On fiverr, we can communicate with freelancers only through the website. So we should check all the thing we require from the beginning of communication. It will save time for us.
By the way, although I believe I could find the better freelancer on the platform, I wasn’t satisfied with the quality of the final design work. I think this is caused by the platform itself. From the experience I also got an idea when to use fiverr. I will describe the reason why and on the next post. (Read “When to choose fiverr for design work”.)
