One of the most frequently asked questions in the product field is what constitutes a great product manager. It is difficult to answer this question definitively, as there is no one-size-fits-all answer. However, certain traits and backgrounds are often associated with great product managers.

This is my take on the 9th most essential traits excellent product managers demonstrate:

  1. Customer empathy

Great product managers are obsessed with their customers, and customer obsession means constantly striving to know and cultivate empathy toward them. The execution part of customer empathy involves talking to them, understanding their needs, and empathizing with their pain — I prefer to learn about their profession as if I'm becoming one myself. For example — If you are a product manager of a product for marketers, take the time to understand a marketer day, KPIs, etc. Take courses, read thought leaders in the field, and learn from the customers.

2. Strategic vision

Great product managers have a clear vision for the future of their products. They can think big and imagine how their products can make a difference in the world — constantly articulating what that future looks like to internal stakeholders, the customers, and the whole market. They can also translate this vision into a roadmap their teams can execute.

3. Data-driven decision-making

Data is king, and product managers that miss that will not be in the top 10%. Product managers need to constantly track metrics and analyze data to understand how their products are performing and what users are doing with them. Data-driven decision-making allows them to make informed product features, pricing, and marketing decisions. Just remember — “You either have data or an opinion.”

4. Collaboration skills

Great product managers are great collaborators. They can work effectively with various stakeholders, including engineers, designers, and marketers. They can also build consensus and get buy-in from their team members.

5. Communication skills

Great product managers are excellent communicators. They can clearly articulate their vision for the product to various audiences, including executives, engineers, designers, and users. They can also listen to feedback and iterate on their ideas.

6. Adaptability

The tech industry is constantly changing, so product managers need to be adaptable. They must quickly learn new technologies and adapt their strategies to changing market conditions. (Not using chatGPT yet? Read this article).

7. Leadership skills

Great product managers are natural leaders. They can motivate and inspire their team members to achieve great things. They are also able to create a positive and productive work environment. Most importantly, they understand that leaders eat last — and their team’s well-being is a top priority.

8. Passion

Great product managers are passionate about their work. They love creating products that make a difference in the world. This contagious passion motivates their team members to do their best work.

9. Resilience/Growth Mindset

The road to success is challenging. Great product managers are resilient and can overcome setbacks and keep moving forward. They are also able to learn from their mistakes and improve their craft.

These are just a few essential traits that great product managers share. I would love to hear your thoughts.
