“Curiosity is, in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last.” — Satya Nadella

Throughout my career, as a leader of product for both startups and Fortune 500 companies, I’ve had the opportunity to interview hundreds of product managers. This experience has given me a deep understanding of what differentiates an amazing product manager from an average one. I have also taken time to validate these insights through conversations with other leaders and research. However, I’ve noticed a gap in the available resources to prepare product managers for interview’s and their career: while many ‘expert’ sources provide a list of typical interview questions for a product manager role, they often overlook discussing the qualities that truly determine a product manager’s success.

Instead of relying on standard questions like, “What do you see a product manager’s main role as?” or “How would you improve your favorite product?” — which only scratch the surface — I prefer to delve into the why behind a candidate’s actions and how they handle crucial situations on a daily basis.

This approach allows me to identify standout product managers quickly. And what truly sets them apart goes beyond technical skills, knowledge of frameworks, or tools. Granted these are important, however nailing them is the minimum expectation. To become exceptional leaders, product managers must cultivate higher-order knowledge and capabilities.

So, are you ready to discover the secret sauce that propels product managers to new heights? It boils down to five essentials: curiosity, collaboration, communication, constraints, and compassion. So let’s dive in.

Curiosity: The Never-ending Quest for Knowledge

Product managers driven by curiosity are always looking for fresh ideas and innovative solutions. Take Steve Jobs from Apple, for instance. His insatiable curiosity, combined with his creativity, led him to explore the potential of touchscreens and intuitive interfaces. This quest for knowledge resulted in groundbreaking products like the iPhone and iPad, which have become integral parts of our daily lives. Jobs’ relentless curiosity set the stage for a new era of mobile technology and inspired countless innovations in the industry.

Collaboration: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Collaboration is the key to unlocking a product’s full potential. Product managers work closely with various teams, such as designers, engineers, and marketers. When everyone works together, remarkable things happen. Just look at Spotify, a leading music streaming platform. Founders Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon understood the importance of collaboration between the music industry and tech developers. By fostering a collaborative environment, they created a platform that united creators and listeners, revolutionizing the music industry and making streaming the new standard for music consumption.

Communication: Without it, There is No Magic

Open communication plays a pivotal role in product development success, as exemplified by Mark Zuckerberg and his team at Facebook. Zuckerberg’s emphasis on open communication within the company fostered an environment where ideas flowed freely and innovation thrived. Regular meetings, brainstorming sessions, and an open feedback culture encouraged team members to share their insights. This collaborative approach led to groundbreaking features like the Facebook News Feed, transforming users’ engagement with social media content. By fostering a culture of open communication, Zuckerberg propelled Facebook’s evolution into a global phenomenon that connects billions of people worldwide.

Constraints: The Art of Embracing Limitations

Constraints may seem restrictive, but they are a product manager’s best friend. They help focus efforts and lead to creative breakthroughs. Take Apple’s original MacBook Air as an example. The team had to work within strict space and weight constraints when designing this ultrathin laptop. These limitations inspired innovation, resulting in unique solutions like a custom battery design and unibody construction. By embracing constraints, Apple’s product managers and engineers delivered a groundbreaking product that set a new standard for portable computing.

Compassion: The Glue That Holds It All Together

Compassion and empathy allow product managers to understand the needs and experiences of everyone involved in the product journey, from team members to end users. Let’s revisit the iPhone example. By empathizing with users’ frustration over clunky mobile interfaces, Steve Jobs and his team at Apple created a product that revolutionized the smartphone experience. Similarly, Spotify’s compassionate understanding of the struggles faced by musicians and listeners led to a platform that caters to their needs while fostering a thriving creative community.

Combining the 5 C’s for Differentiation

Product managers can create engaging products by integrating curiosity, collaboration, communication, constraints, and compassion. They bridge gaps between teams and foster environments that thrive on innovation. As a product manager, consider how to incorporate these essential qualities into your daily work and decision-making process. Ask yourself: How can I be more curious, collaborative, communicative, and adaptive in the face of constraints while maintaining compassion and empathy for my team and customers?

Embrace the 5 C’s, and you’ll become a successful product manager who creates exceptional products that delight customers and stand out in the market. The power to elevate your product management career lies in your hands — are you ready?
