“The clearer and more focused our mind, the more effective and insightful our decision-making becomes. Mindfulness is a powerful tool for cultivating clarity, focus, and insight.” — Janice Marturano

Picture yourself staring at an opportunity with negative thoughts streaming through your head like an endless Netflix series. You want to engage. Yet, your brain is telling you to run. You know you have other priorities, and this new product will be another addition to the list. But at the same time, you understand that the opportunity to make an impact is enormous.

It’s like standing at the edge of a cliff, with your toes hanging off the side as you get ready for the climb down. You can feel the fear of falling creeping up your spine, telling you to step back. But at the same time, a sense of excitement and anticipation comes with the possibility of accomplishment.

Silencing Doubts During Product Strategy

As a seasoned product manager, I have experienced this struggle many times. That is until I got a chance to participate in a mindfulness exercise. An experience that taught me an incredibly valuable lesson. I learned that with a quick mindfulness exercise, I could shift my perspective, silence the doubts and concentrate on the possibilities instead. It was truly eye-opening!

In fact, the most important lesson I learned when preparing for product strategy initiation (or any significant work) is the importance of getting into the right mindset. It’s now a core part of my pre-launch ritual for product strategy development. And it’s made a huge difference in how quickly I can engage, focus, and dedicate attention!

And even though negative thoughts tend to creep in (hey, we’re all human!), I now have a reset button to help me deal with them. This change helped me realize how risky it can be to start a product strategy with a negative, distracted mindset. So, take it from me — always make time to get into the right headspace. If not, you will face the following risks:

  • Distraction. Negative thoughts will continue to pull you away if you can’t rid yourself of them. It’s one of the reasons professional consultants only take on a limited number of projects at one time — focus.
  • Speed. Negative thoughts and distractions will drag you down, causing you to move slower. As you second-guess yourself, you will overthink each step and each decision.
  • Team. Your team will see through any attempts to mask your negative thoughts and distractions. If you aren’t in a good place — your team won’t be either. As the leader, your team follows you. They need to feel positive, focused, and supported to do their best work.

Mindfulness In Product Strategy Moving Forward

In my case, the introduction of the new product driving the negative thoughts proved to be the crucial factor that allowed my company to survive and thrive. The situation was dire, and the organization’s future hinged on this new offering. However, I only recognized and fully embraced the significance of this development and my ability to deliver it after taking a step back and reassessing the situation through mindfulness.

From there on out, I made a purposeful effort to incorporate mindfulness into my daily routine. I also learned that cultivating a positive mindset is not a one-time event but an ongoing process that requires consistent effort.

And over the years, I’ve discovered some effective steps that have enabled me to successfully execute a product strategy in record time, with a positive attitude and extreme focus. To put mindfulness into practice for product strategy, I suggest the following steps:

  • Find 2–3 minutes to focus. While some say one minute is enough, 2–3 minutes is more effective.
  • Find a quiet place with minimal distractions. I can only practice mindfulness successfully with little noise or distractions around me.
  • Turn off your phone, computer, and other potential distractions.
  • Focus solely on your breathing for the first minute. Be present and inhale and exhale deeply.
  • For the second minute, focus on the task at hand while continuing to breathe deeply. Visualize the great things that will result from its success.
  • For the final minute, focus on the end goal. What do you need to achieve?
  • Set a reminder on your calendar or phone to conduct this three-minute mindfulness exercise before beginning work on the product strategy each day.

Maintaining A Positive State of Mind

Once you’ve completed your mindfulness exercise, you are ready to get to work. After you get in the right state of mind remember that single-tasking is critical. Avoid distractions such as email, Slack, and other messaging platforms.

Side note — accepting what you cannot change is also essential. If the timeline is set, don’t dwell on it. Accepting that timelines are often fixed for a reason can prevent unnecessary stress and help you stay positive.

Mindfulness in product strategy and development involves being fully present, focused, and aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions as you make decisions, interact with stakeholders, and manage the product development lifecycle from strategy through execution.

A final thought — as you move toward a more mindful process for strategy development, I also recommend considering a growth mindset. Be flexible and willing to learn as you go. View changes as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. Keeping an open mind helps maintain a mindful state.
