A meditation on how user stories can be really stupid

The user story format imposes just enough formality to insist we account for the persona, need, and purpose of a planned capability. But the format has a tautological flaw, as it often generates something like this:

As a [persona], I [need] because I [need].

Yup, this user wants something because she wants to do that thing. When they’re not…
