Advice

> What should a product manager be doing the first day/week/month of their new job?

They shouldn’t try to change anything about the organization their first day. Most importantly, they should listen and observe. Once they are there for a few days or weeks they should start to test out how the system works within the organization. This is something that Cynefin talks about for complex realm systems. You should probe (some action to test), sense (what happened) and respond (take another action based on what you learned).

I have seen a lot of new product managers (they tend to be experienced in other fields) coming into a new team with a lot of changes when starting. The reason why they tend to fall flat is that they don’t know why things are the way they are. They don’t understand the history and context. Because of this they are assuming that something that fits somewhere else will work there.
