Being paired with my mentor Mark Haseltine, CTO at Edx, was a unique and valuable experience. I’ve been fortunate to have several key mentors in my career. Each has advised me in different ways and on different aspects of what I can bring to an organization both personally and professionally.

Find a sponsor , not a mentor — someone who is in the room when opportunities arise and makes sure your name comes up. Building trust can be tough when you’re a new hire in a leadership position. A couple of years later, I got into a real leadership position. It’s more challenging to get than a mentor.
