Meanwhile, if they’ve read the Lean Startup, have a certification, spend their days tagging JIRA tickets, painstakingly created a product roadmap based on user votes without talking to anyone, and have a spreadsheet with RICE columns per JIRA ticket… they’re a plain-Jane-boring-old-builder.

I wasn’t called a Product Manager until I bailed out of that and landed in a startup. In early days, when many of the creators of these processes were working as consultants in companies, the Product Owner was the customer – an internal person in the business who would sit with the team and prioritize the backlog of work.
