Founded in 2006 with a unique social mission: for every pair of shoes sold, they would donate a pair to a child in need, an initiative they called “One for One.” However, despite a strong, socially motivated purpose, TOMS struggled due to a lack of focus on business value and product differentiation.

Product management under engineering is also a disaster. I believe that an effective product management organization defines ‘WHAT’ the product is or will do and engineering /development defines ‘HOW’ it will do it. Together they decide when, based on resources, strategy, etc. Product management under sales.

When I was at a startup working on hotel-guest communication through in-room tablets, one of the engineers had the idea to build a chatbot that would help guests quickly find relevant information about their stay. If so, it’s probably a recommendation problem.
