We need engineers involved throughout. I started my career as a softwareengineer. Every single person that contributes to building a product, all of the makers in the room, we need to care about our customers, we need to make sure that what we’re building is going to work for them. Discovery is a team sport.
Are you inviting your engineers to participate in discovery with you? Does your organization prefer that your engineers only write code? Marty Cagan , in Inspired , argues, “If you’re just using your engineers to code, you’re only getting about half their value.” And, sadly, many engineers make this mistake themselves.
It’s no secret that engineers can be hesitant to participate in product trios. They might feel anxious about taking on tasks that are new to them and outside their regular routine at work, like speaking directly with customers. They might fear that any time not spent coding is time when their technical skills are falling behind.
Speaker: Ben Epstein, Stealth Founder & CTO | Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO, Aggregage
In this new session, Ben will share how he and his team engineered a system (based on proven softwareengineering approaches) that employs reproducible test variations (via temperature 0 and fixed seeds), and enables non-LLM evaluation metrics for at-scale production guardrails.
When we interview customers , our goal is to learn as much as we can about their context. Maybe the customer tells you explicitly that this is not their usual way of doing things. You might already have a Voice of the Customer (VoC) program in place that you’re looking to improve, or perhaps you’re just trying to get started. Now, more than ever, your customers want to be heard.
Preparing for interview questions in softwareengineering is almost a full-time job. If you are a graduate softwareengineer and getting ready for your first job interviews, here are the different areas you should focus on. How does your background fit with what they do? Any PM or technical leader who’s led the charge of building a digital product knows that product engineering is one of the most expensive elements of business. How do you help your engineers get on board with buying instead of building? What happens to the business if the product provider switches off the service that was bought?

How can you get your engineer to participate in your product trio? How can product trios work with userresearchers? Most product trios are comprised of a product manager, a designer, and an engineer. The most common form of cross-functional collaboration happens between product managers, designers, and engineers.
What about userresearchers, data analysts, product marketing managers, and all your other favorite roles? In my book Continuous Discovery Habits , I wrote that a product trio is typically comprised of a product manager, a designer, and a softwareengineer. Why didn’t I include userresearchers? UX writers?

In the old way of working, a business stakeholder communicated a need to a product manager, the product manager wrote requirements , handed them off to a designer, who then created designs, and then the requirements and the designs were handed off to engineers to implement. We want all of our team members to have some exposure to customers.
We are at the start of a revolution in customer communication, powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence. Our Custom Bots and Resolution Bot already work for thousands of businesses every day. New softwareengineers quickly learn that a lot of complexity arises from error handling.
For many companies, the word localization typically prompts two thoughts: it’s costly, and it’s time-consuming. At its core, localization is the process of adapting a product or service to meet the needs and expectations of consumers in a particular country or region. The hidden costs of forgoing localization. In a traditional company, a product manager sits in the middle between business stakeholders and the engineering team. The product manager gathers requirements, documents them, a designer creates a design based on those requirements, and the engineers build software based on those requirements. Tweet This.
As a startup scales, the importance of infrastructure engineers simply can’t be overstated. They’re the ones making sure your app is secure, that uptime looks good, and that the rest of your engineering org has the right tools to build features your users need and want. The tenets of foundation engineering at Stripe.
One of the main examples of this are the customizedsoftware applications that companies are rushing to develop to allow them to better connect with their users. To create such solutions, companies need softwareengineering professionals who can provide the expertise required. Let’s dive right in. by the year 2024.
Its written to help non-engineers understand the value of softwareengineering. Others assumed their users were all experienced developers. Do they pair program with their customers to understand where there are gaps in their documentation or their endpoint coverage? Do they usability test their API?
I know many authors who use their blog as a way to test content. So I put the book on hold and started devising a plan to test my content. This gave me a great feedback loop to measure the efficacy of my content. Some teams got stuck because they couldn’t find customers to interview. I knew I needed more feedback.

In the product world, that means our customers and our end-users. Imagine a single person who represents your target user or customer. For example, with my coaching business, I don’t want to define my target customer as a head of product. Ignore everyone who doesn’t match your ideal user or customer.
From premature optimization to over-engineering solutions for your product, it’s easy to get caught up in making technology decisions that slow you down instead of speeding you up. Many of these approaches are intended as reasonable defaults; they are my opinions, they aren’t rules, and they certainly won’t fit every situation.
I’ve led teams of engineers for almost a decade but when I look back at my own management career I regularly thought I was a “good manager”, at times even a great one.
