I became a product manager because I wanted to take a more strategic role at my company. First, I did not know how to frame, develop and present product strategy in a systematic way, and second, as a startup, my company has not historically had a good track record of strategy being developed outside of senior management (read: founder).

As a listener of this podcast, your journey in some way involves developing and managing products. The titles vary, but you likely relate to product manager, product leader (such as a Product VP or CPO), or innovator. This is something I’ve been asked about many times since starting the podcast in 2015.
By general consensus product management as a discipline in AsiaPac remains behind the West and the product management role is misunderstood at times. And this is borne out by anecdotal evidence – a cursory tour of any reputable recruitment site shows that there are thousands of open senior product management jobs at the moment.
I believe the future of product management is product thinking. Just adding more product managers, is not the answer.
