Optimize for Respectful Remote Meetings

Johanna Rothman

I've had the pleasure—and displeasure—of many remote meetings over the past few weeks. The difficult meetings had a common root cause: the meeting leaders attempted to do a direct transfer of how they lead an in-person meeting to remote/WFH meetings. When that occurs, they miss the ability to optimize on our separation by choosing how to treat people and by how we create a meeting environment. What do I mean by respect in remote meetings?

Five Meeting Tips for Newly-Remote Teams

Johanna Rothman

I found the biggest change when I started to work remotely was how meetings changed. When we meet in a conference room, we can see each other. The cameras mimic how we meet in person. I see too many meetings (in-person or remote) where the people don't know what to expect. Your Guide to Modern Project Management , I said you don't need to attend a meeting with no agenda. I recommend Lean Coffee instead of serial status meetings.).

How to Run Great Cross-Functional Team Meetings

The Product Coalition

One outstanding way to do that is to run great team meetings. By team meeting I don’t mean your staff meeting (if you are a manager), daily stand-ups or reviews with your execs. It’s rare for the engineers or even the designers to say, “hey, can we meet on that?”. And they don’t consider meetings to be “work”. We, of course, know that work can’t get done without meetings to figure out what work to do. In this case, for your meeting attendees.

The most obvious one is that consulting is like product management in that you understand problems that a customer is facing, brainstorm solutions, select one or more, implement, then iterate. How often are we going to meet?
